Microcosm/MacrocosmScientific and Mystical View on the Origin of the Universe, the Nature of Matter & Human Consciousness
|
| The central argument of the Within-Without from
Zero Points series is that all “cosmoses,” from that of the universe and
the quanta of physics, to the consciousness of a human being, must be understood
in terms of zero point dynamics. Madame Blavatsky describes
“material points without extension”–or zero points–as the foundations or
materials upon which the Gods “clothe themselves in bodies.”
In order to understand the physical and metaphysical nature of human consciousness, it is useful to grasp the physical and metaphysical nature of the larger universe or cosmos. Both originate and evolve out of the same root principles, according to the same fundamental cosmic principles of creation and design. This idea is embodied in the mystical axiom, “As above, so below.” The human being embodies the same principles of design and formation, and zero point dynamics, as manifest within the universe. Further, Blavatsky notes:
The Secret Doctrine depicts any cosmos as a “Son,” a “wink of the Eye of Self-Existence,” and “a spark of eternity.” Blavatsky draws from the ancient Stanzas of Dyzan, of esoteric Tibetan Buddhist origin, to depict creation processes: |
... THE SONS EXPAND AND CONTRACT THROUGH THEIR OWN SELVES AND HEARTS; THEY EMBRACE INFINITUDE. ... EACH IS A PART OF THE WEB. REFLECTING THE “SELF-EXISTENT LORD” LIKE A MIRROR, EACH BECOMES IN TURN A WORLD. (Stanzas of Dzyan, III, 11-12, The Secret Doctrine)The Sons expand and contract through their “own selves and hearts.” This principle applies equally to the macroscopic universe and to the living entities, the quanta of consciousness, the divine sparks or Monads. Any Cosmos, any Universe, any Monad (or divine spark), any atom or quantum, is “worked and guided from within outwards,” and is founded upon zero point centers–hence the title of this series, Within/Without from Zero Points. The processes of creation, involution and evolution, contraction and expansion, are all associated with the mysterious zero point centres established within the heart. At the heart of the Universe, a quanta or a human being, there is a zero point foundation. The Cosmos, a quantum, and spiritual sparks, all have zero point foundations and are rooted into the hidden dimensions of hyperspace and the void/plenum of the quantum vacuum. Zero points are where the metaphysical forces and influences emerge from within the Unified fields of God, or of the Divine and spiritual realms of Being, into outward physical expression and embodiment. Everyone in this view is some type of ‘Divine Fraction’ of the underlying Whole. |
| A zero point is not a ‘thing’ as such–like a simple material
particle imagined to be moving around within the four dimensional space-time
continuum. However, a zero point can be talked of as having
a ‘particle’ nature–like a divine element within a human being–a ‘God spark.’
In eastern sacred literature, the infinitesimal ‘jivatma’–or individual
spiritual soul, is a particle of the ‘paramatma’–the infinite universal
spirit. The ‘divine element’ within a human being is a zero point
source of ‘I’ within a living being. Further, this fundamental source
element or nature, the living entity within, is rooted into a ‘seven dimensional
hyperspace.’ As one penetrates into the nature of things–into the
nature of the universe, atom or human being–we come to such strange point
sources rooted into the metaphysical domains of existence which underlie
and sustain familiar reality. Zero points are rooted into a seven
dimensional hyperspace, and the four dimensional space-time complex is
itself based upon such a zero point foundation.
These bizarre ideas are actually supported by a scholarly study of esoteric mystical teachings of eastern and western sources, and they are consistent with modern scientific concepts. Scientists already trace the origin of the Universe back to a ‘point source,’ a singularity, which emerged out of the higher dimensional space of the quantum vacuum. The most advanced theories in modern physics and cosmology are of a seven dimensional hyperspace of “compacted dimensions,” which underlies the familiar four dimensional space-time complex. The universe emerged from what I am referring to as a ‘zero point,’ and all things are sustained within a seven dimensional hyperspace. In modern physics, particles or quanta are now similarly conceived of as vibrational modes of superstring elements, established within a sevenfold hyperspace. Scientists talk of both the universe and the quanta of physics as having, what I would call in accord with Blavatsky, a zero point nature. So we can approach the concepts of zero points from the perspective offered by modern physics and cosmology. Unfortunately, the scientists, psychologists and philosophers do not consider that there is anything particularly ‘mystical’ about such ideas, nor do they conceive of the possibility that human beings might similarly have such ‘zero point’ origins. Another example of zero-point origins is provided by the growth of a human beings’ physical body. At conception, a fertilized ovum is barely visible to the naked eye–as an incredibly small point element. The whole body grows from what appears as a point source barely visible, which then expands or grows from within/without. Of course, it unfolds into four dimensional space/time, and is sustained by elements within its environment, but the patterns of growth and change emerge from within/without, from what appears as a point source. Of course, there is a whole inner world to this apparent ‘zero point’ source–the fertilized ovum with all of its biophysical processes and the DNA/RNA molecules. However, the point is that what appears from one dimension to be an undifferentiated unit, a fertilized ovum, is a whole other world within. So also, other zero point sources involve whole other inner worlds. Zero points mark the transitions from one dimension of reality into deeper dimensions–realms on a different ‘order of scale.’ The body can be described as growing from ‘within-without’ from a point source, just like the universe emerged within-without from a point source. The living being is also such a ‘quantum system’ which emerges from such a singlet state. This is how things are rooted into the primordial realms which underlie and sustain all things. |

The mystic Gurdjieff once described such mysterious zero point sources:
In Gurdjieff’s teachings, the relationship of “I” to “God” or the “Sun Absolute” is the relationship of the zero-dimension to the infinite, and it is all tied up in seven dimensions. Everything, in this view, is some form of ‘Divine Fraction’ of the whole deriving from a zero point source. The mystical heart doctrine, elaborated in Book I of this series, argues that human beings have a spiritual and soul nature, and that the deepest level of the “I” or “Self” is related to the zero point foundation within the heart centre. The Self emerges as a zero point spiritual or divine spark, a point source of pure light consciousness rooted into metaphysical dimensions of space, emanating out of realms of higher being and non-being. The Self emerges within/without from the metaphysical realms into the physical dimensions. It is associated with a quantum of pure light consciousness, an emanation of the lux, behind the subtle faculties of spirit and mind, and the vital life principles in the physical body. The Self is the point source of individual consciousness and spirit, and the living entity, the “I.” This, at one level, might be described as a ‘spiritual spark,’ but at an even deeper level it might be described as a ‘divine spark.’ Mystics describe varied hidden dimensions of the Self within the heart as related to such zero point dynamics and thereby to the larger dimensions of the universe, and to the grounds of being–within God. The experience of God consciousness is thus said to be latent within all human beings. The achieving of real I is thus associated most intimately with the awakening of the heart centre, and penetrating the veils which obscure our true nature. It all makes sense, to me as the fool at the zero point, to consider what the supposedly enlightened swamis, saints and seers have to say about the mysteries of human consciousness, and to seriously inquire into the hypothesis that there is a ‘God spark,’ within a human being. As it happens, in this strange universe, mystical descriptions of the origin and nature of human consciousness are ‘ultrafantastic’–to borrow a phrase from Gurdjieff. They are awesome and profound–most certainly worthy of being considered as a serious scientific hypotheses and a philosophical viewpoint. However, not only do the mystical teachings offer a new yet ancient way of understanding the enigmas of consciousness, but further, these teachings offer a new way of interpreting other mysteries, enigmas and theories within physics, cosmology and the life sciences. There are innumerable “gaps” remaining in science where supernatural influences and causes are necessary–all part of what Dr. Carl Sagan referred to as “divine microintervention.” In fact, the zero point hypothesis is all about the mechanism and dynamics of such divine micro-intervention. If indeed creation is the manifestation of supernatural intelligence and being–labelled God, or whatever, and further, human beings do have a soul and spiritual nature, then this certainly raises all kinds of scientific issues about the mechanisms and dynamics of it all. Throughout these zero point studies, we are investigating both ‘the God hypothesis’ and its corollary–‘the soul hypothesis,’ or the ‘God-spark hypothesis.’ There is in fact a vast existing literature in the world suggesting that there are all kinds of psychical, spiritual and divine forces active within the life of nature and within human beings; and our account of the world will always be incomplete if we can not include investigations into these realms. In fact, there are already all kinds of evidence for other realms of possible human experience–within after-life states and in expanded states of consciousness. Unfortunately, modern so-called ‘exact scientists,’ for the most part, ignore and dismiss the serious consideration of such phenomena which all point to experiences of consciousness within a multidimensional Universe. Instead, they prefer to embrace what Blavatsky describes as the ‘Frankenstein monster’ of materialist science philosophy. The Within-Without from Zero Point series raises all kinds of questions about the mechanisms and dynamics of natural phenomena, and the role of divine and spiritual intelligences within life and creation. The first portion of Microcosm/Macrocosm explores the issues of the origin of the universe and the nature of matter, while comparing scientific and mystical perspectives. It is very unfortunate that modern scientists have such a narrow materialist philosophy for the interpretation of the ‘facts’ of science, and so we must consider their findings from the perspective of the occult teachings, and shed an alternate light upon their remarkable theories. As Blavatsky commented in 1888:
